5000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன் பண்டைய தமிழகத்தில் தோன்றிய உடற்பயிற்சி தியான முறை ஓகக் (யோக) கலை ஆகும். அதில் ஓக இருக்கை (யோகாசனம்) குறிப்பாக உடற்பயிற்சியையும் நிலைகளையும் குறிக்கும்.
ஓகம் என்ற சொல் தமிழ்ச் சொல் ஆகும். "ஓகம் என்றால் அலையும் மனதை அலையாமல் ஒரு நேர்வழிப்படுத்தும் செயல் என்று எளிமையாகவும் உரைக்கின்றனர்.
ஓகம் என்றால் முயற்சி, வினை, பாடு, கடினம், உழைப்பு, இது போன்ற பல்வேறு பொருட்கள் உண்டு. ஓகம் என்பதற்கு இணையான இன்னொரு சொல் தவம்.
ஆசனம் என்ற சொல்லுக்கு 'இருக்கை' என்பது பொருள். உடலை ஒரு நிலையில் குறிப்பிட்ட அளவு நேரம் இருக்கச் செய்யும் உடற்பயிற்சியையும் அவை சார்ந்த நிலைகளையும் குறிக்கும் சொல்லே யோகாசனம். தமிழில் இதை ஓக இருக்கை என்றழைக்கலாம்.
“யோக்” என்பது வடமொழிச் சொல். அதுவேதான் ஆங்கிலத்திலும் யோகா என்றாகியது. ஆனால் நம்முடைய தமிழில் “ஓகம்” என்ற சொல்தான், இந்த யோகா என்பதற்கான அடிப்படை மூலம். நெடுங்காலமாக இங்கே புதிர் ஒன்று நடந்துகொண்டு இருக்கிறது. நம்முடைய கலைகளை வடமொழி தனதாகக் கையகப்படுத்திக்கொண்டு மாற்றியமைத்து, திரித்து, தனது போலவும், இவற்றினுடைய மூலமே தங்களது போலவும் தமிழர்களிடம் உள்ள எல்லா நல்லவற்றையும் களவாடிக்கொண்டது. ஓகம் என்றால் முயற்சி, வினை, பாடு, கடினம், உழைப்பு, இது போன்ற பல்வேறு பொருட்கள் உண்டு. ஓகம் என்பதற்கு இணையான இன்னொரு சொல் தவம்.
